The Louis F. Payn Foundation, a retirement residence for some twenty-five men and women, is a bit of an anachronism in today’s world. Still occupying its original site, a handsome, ivy-covered brick building constructed in 1929 on Coleman Street (Route 203) in Chatham, New York, the Payn Home remains the realization of a philanthropist’s dream. Louis F. Payn, a leading citizen of both Chatham and the country in the early part of the century, endowed a foundation in his own name to maintain a gracious haven for older members of the local community. That lovely old building on Coleman Street, set amid great trees and well-tended gardens, still provides a welcoming home for retired people.
